It was 1995, the height of Britpop. I was out in the city on the hottest day of the year, camera in hand, working freelance and looking for the kind of moments that tell a bigger story.
As I wandered through Kelvingrove Park, I spotted her — a girl on roller skates, earphones in, Walkman clipped to her shorts. For a second, it didn’t feel like Glasgow at all. It looked like a scene lifted straight out of Los Angeles, or a movie from TV. The light, the energy, the effortless cool of it all — it just worked.
I snapped the shot. Later, I phoned the picture desk of the national paper. The editor, half-distracted, just said, “Send it in — we get thousands of photos.” I didn’t expect much. But the next morning, to my surprise, there it was — front page.
