Glencoe Piper Scotland 1999 by Brian Anderson
The Piper. Glencoe. 1999.
It was a winter trip through Scotland. I stopped at a snack van in Glencoe — one of those moments that wasn't planned, wasn't scheduled, just happened.
There was a piper playing for tourists by the roadside. Nothing unusual about that in the Highlands. But something about him stopped me.
I asked if I could photograph him with the mountains behind him. He said yes. As he walked the wind came in hard off the glen — so strong it nearly took his bearskin clean off his head.
I never got his name.
I lost almost every photograph from that day. All of them gone except one — saved by chance on a laptop at a time when we didn't think about backing things up. This was it.
Twenty six years later I still don't know who he is. I never will. But somehow that feels right. He wasn't posing for history. He was just a man doing his job on a windy day in Glencoe while the mountains watched.
That's the photograph. That's the tee. That's the print.
Some images survive for a reason.
