Billy Connollys Banana Boots 2010

$160.00

The Boots. Glasgow City Chambers. 2010.

I was working as a press photographer that day. Sent on assignment for the national press. Glasgow was giving Billy Connolly the keys to the city.

The crowds gathered outside the City Chambers. You could feel the electricity before he even arrived. This was Glasgow welcoming home one of its own. Not a celebrity. Not a performer. One of its own.

When he arrived he was in magnificent form.

He didn't walk past the crowd. He stopped. He talked. He cracked jokes to the Scottish press pack standing in the rain with their cameras. He smiled. He chatted. He took selfies with fans. He pointed directly into my lens with that unmistakeable grin.

A man completely at home in the city that made him.

I pointed my camera downward.

Those boots. Those magnificent yellow banana boots. Standing on the streets of Glasgow on one of the greatest days the city had seen in years.

I've carried this photograph for fifteen years.

Billy Connolly didn't just get the keys to Glasgow that day. He already had them. He always had them.

This is the photo of his boots This is the print. This is the moment.

Glasgow. 2010. The Big Yin came home.
