Glasgow Riot - Dodging The Rain and Bottles since 1988

£122.38

The clock still
runs on Glasgow time

Thirty-eight years of watching a city boil and breathe — and the Tolbooth Tower stands over it all, indifferent as stone.

PHOTOGRAPHER Brian Anderson
LOCATION Merchant City, Glasgow
YEAR 2026

I have been standing in this city since 1988, which means I have been standing in the rain. Mostly. Sometimes doging  bottles too. Glasgow Cross has a way of pulling the city's temperature to the surface — its grief, its fury, its stubborn, carnival joy — and placing it all beneath a clock that has been watching longer than any of us.

This frame was made in 2026, the year the streets decided they had things to say. The Tolbooth Tower is in the background where it always is, older than the arguments below it, older than the country that now argues about itself in its shadow. The crowd in the foreground is blurred by motion or by heat or by the particular kind of restlessness that has no clean name. Disorder. The word the editors use. I prefer: testimony.

"You don't photograph disorder. You photograph people who have run out of other languages."

The blue cast in the print is not nostalgia. It is the colour the light actually was — that flat Glaswegian sky that gives nothing away, neither warmth nor threat, just its enormous grey patience over everything happening below. I have printed it exactly as I saw it. That is the only promise I make.

Seventy-five editions. Each framed, each colour a different key into the same room. You stand in front of the one that chose you and you hear it: the particular noise of a city that has never once been quiet about what it wants.
